Marvin Statler has spent the last fifteen years in self- confinement on the two floors of the lamp store he owns and lives above, having retreated from the outside world because of a case of agoraphobia triggered by the murder of his father. As mounting debt, a declining business and rapid neighborhood gentrification force him sell his building, Marvin struggles against the reality that he must finally leave the cocoon he has constructed. His quiet routine, shared with Penny - his caring and loyal employee - is suddenly disrupted by Darlene, a former love interest who offers a glimpse of connection and renewal,
and his nephew,Jacob, who suddenly and unexpectedly appears late one night at his front door and triggers Marvin's feelings of guilt over the unhealed schism with his brother, Michael.

Michael

Marvin's younger brother, Michael worked with him for several years in the lamp store. When his wife, Bev, was diagnosed with cancer, he asked Marvin for financial assistance and even requested that he sellthe store. When, because of his agoraphobia, Marvin refused, Michael left the business and never looked back. Their split was cemented when Marvin failed to attend Bev’s funeral. They never spoke directly again, and Michael died withoutthe rift ever having been mended. Michael is a stoic and stubborn individual, arguably, to a fault.

Darlene

Darlene, an old flame from Marvin's past, owns a donut shop near the lamp store. A firecracker of a personality with a deeply nurturing soul, she endeavors to reconnect with him under the guise of her weekly donut deliveries to his shop. Recently divorced after a marriage that simply ran its course,Darlene's renewed interest in Marvin is in part nostalgia, curiosity, and the desire to determine whether or not there is still unfinished “business” between them.

A small-time wannabe hustler who announces himself late one night as Marvin's nephew, Jacob is an affable young man constantly chasing half- baked dreams. Impulsive and impatient, he wants quick results but lacks the discipline to attain them. His plans are riddled with rather obvious pitfalls, but he clings to his designs with a foolish optimism,forever convinced that success is only one slick move away.
